Introducing "tags" for Task Ideas

Hi, we have felt for some time that our users don't really understand how many great task ideas we have in the system. (we are close to 200 now) Categories were helpful, but dont break down the ideas into small enough groups. So today we introduced tags. Tags are the labels you will see in the Task Idea category ribbons that you can click on and will show you just the ideas that relate to this tag. We hope this helps you find the ideas you are looking for more quickly!

Version 1.1.734 released

Hi KeepUp users, we released our first post live patch to production this morning, this was a minor patch to improve the following:

-IE6 User Experience - we have been working hard to track down IE 6 issues and found what appears to be a pretty big fix (from the feedback so far). If you had trouble where the site would lock up or get slow, or you would have to a link or save button multiple times to get it to work, give us one more try, these items should be fixed now.

-Club KeepUp Improvements - we received lots of great feedback from our users regarding our new Club KeepUp service and have done the following:

  • added the ability to delete a club.
  • when creating clubs check for duplicate title. (prevent double click creating 2 clubs)
  • now when users subscribe to your club they get all the events you have already created that are not past due. (we will make this even more configurable in future releases)
  • when sending invites for club, accept semi colon separation and look for valid emails within standard yahoo/outlook email format, for example "Joel Nylund" <nospam@gottakeepup.com> now works, we will parse out just the email portion of this.
  • added moderation for public clubs. (we now will review all public clubs for the standard stuff)

-Some other general user interface improvements & compatibility fixes.

Introducing Club KeepUp

We have been hard at work adding a key new feature to our service, this feature is called "Club KeepUp". This feature allows you to create a Club (either public or for a private list of friends) and allow others to subscribe to this club. Once your club is setup and you have subscribers you can create "Events" which become special tasks in the users "MyTasks" section. These special tasks are owned by the user, but the due date is controlled by the club administrator.

Here is a simple example:
My boys play on soccer teams and these teams typically have a manager, the manager is tasked with making sure everyone knows about events like games, picture day, when to bring a snack, etc. The problem with this is everyone gets lots of emails at the beginning of the season but never remembers what to do when. With Club KeepUp the manager could create a club, have all the team members subscribe, and then they would get the reminders at the right time for each event coming up via Email or Text message on their mobile phone, and also in their MyTasks section on the KeepUp site. Our club reminders go out right away when the event is published by the administrator, so this could even be used to let folks know that a game is rained out or moved to a new location for any reason.

One of the advanced features of Club KeepUp is that you can have  Location Relevant Events. For example, if you have a favorite band that you want to know about you can keep up with their events within a certain number of miles to where you live (or to where you travel). You can subscribe to location based events where we calculate the distance from the event to your location and decide if its relevant to you based on the number of miles you entered in your subscription.

We will be working with lots of folks in the coming months to get some great public clubs, but in the meantime please try out the private clubs for your schools, sports teams, church groups, clubs and any other group.

Text yourself a reminder using your mobile phone

One of our goals when we started KeepUp was to make it very easy to enter reminders no matter where you are. In todays day and age just about everyone has a mobile phone that is capable of sending text messages using SMS. Most people don't know what SMS is, but when I say "You know, how you voted for your American Idol Favorites" they get it right away.

As of last week we rolled out our inbound text service where you can now text yourself a reminder. Here is how it works:

1.) Make sure your mobile number is filled out properly in your KeepUp Profile.

2.) Add the KeepUp number to your cellphone and save it in your contacts, the number is : 571-232-7456.

3.) Text reminder message to the KeepUp number & hit send.

So for example: "Get Wife Flowers" will create a reminder due today to get your wife some flowers.

Pretty easy, now for the advanced users, we built a pretty flexible parsing engine that will turn your message into a reminder using the following rules.

- Look for a date first, if we find a date (in almost any form) that's the due date.
- Look for a category next, if we find a category such as Auto, Home, People, Pet or Event, then that becomes the category.
- If we find a category, look for a corresponding Person, Home, Pet, Car, etc.
- Take what's left and make it the title.

- You can separate these text items using colons (:), commas(,) or spaces ( )

So for example, I keep forgetting to cancel my gym membership, ugh, every month I pay another $30 and  I never go anymore. I always remember while out and about, so I texted: "cancel gym membership, personal, joel" and it created a reminder in the Personal category assigned to me.

Another example, I always miss those Costco sales where they have super specials a given week, and this week they have shavers on sale, so sent "9/4/07:get costco shaver:personal:joel" and it gave me a task with a due date of Sept 4th.

If you are out and forget what to do, you can always text "help" or "?" to the KeepUp number, it will return the format of the text message to send.

Please try this out and let us know what you think, we recommend sending yourself a test text reminder to make sure everything is set up properly. Happy texting!
